REFORMA Call for Proposals

Please see the below call for research proposals from REFOEMA.  There is a need for more research on Children's Library Service to Latinos.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: ¡Investigaciones para servirles! Research At Your Service! A Research Competition co-sponsored by REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library & Information Services to Latinos & the Spanish-speaking) and the Library Research Round Table

Librarians and information professionals do a lot of work to meet the information needs of the whole population. Research helps us determine what those needs are and how we can meet them most efficiently and most effectively – both major funded research projects and smaller investigations of one library's user group.

The growth of the Latino population means the profession needs research about Latinos and their information environments.  As a researcher and as president of REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-speaking, I would like to invite you to consider submitting your latest research that focuses on the Latino population, their library and/or information needs, and/or the responses of the LIS community to those needs.

Who is encouraged to apply? Everyone! Librarians, master's students, doctoral students, researchers, etc. You need not be Latino, and you need not speak Spanish. How do you apply?

Send a proposal via email, containing the following*A cover page with the author's name, title of the paper, and author's contact information, including e-mail address. *A separate page that includes only the title of the paper and a 500-word abstract, summarizing the proposed presentation. *Your abstract should include a research question or hypothesis, research design and methods, theoretical framework (if appropriate), and results (if completed).

Presentations should be based on original research, either completed or in process, and should not have been published prior to the conference.

Submissions should be e-mailed in the form of Microsoft Word (*.doc), Open Office Writer (*.odt), RTF, or PDF attachments, to: Sandra Rios Balderrama, REFORMA Office Manager,  sandra@reforma.org .

The deadline has been extended to April 15.

All submissions will be evaluated by a panel of referees, and three papers will be selected for presentation at the “Investigaciones par servirles/Research at your service” forum at ALA's 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago. The three winners will receive a $250 honorarium from REFORMA. (These honoraria were a donation made by a Reformista!) Presentations will be limited to 15 minutes, with additional time for questions and discussion.

For questions and more information, please e-mail Denice Adkins, denice.adkins@reforma.org

WLA Annual Conference

Play. Create. Innovate!

This is the theme for the 2013 WLA Conference, which will take place October 22-25 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We already have a fabulous line-up of keynote speakers and exciting special events scheduled for your enjoyment, but now we need YOU! Help us provide exceptional learning and collaborative experiences by offering your talents and know-how as a presenter for a conference session.

We have a variety of options available for presenters this year. Consider presenting a 45-minute session or trying one of our "Start to Finish" 3-hour sessions that would help attendees focus on project-based work they can complete on Friday morning. Units can sponsor a Sunrise Session on Thursday morning to address business meetings and encourage "Birds of a Feather" discussions on issues that matter to their members.

Consider sessions related to the conference theme, as well as some of these topics: back to the book; collections (building, sharing, transforming, cataloging); collaboration; library issues and challenges; advocacy; PR; programming; instruction; technology & digital services; engaging people; leadership and personal development.
But don't let those ideas limit you! Suggest any program you'd like to try and we'll give it due consideration. We're looking for an interesting array of programs that represent the variety of library audiences represented by WLA.

Please complete the program request form by March 22nd (one for each program proposal or meeting request). We'll let you know by April 30th if your request is accepted.
We look forward to celebrating your talents and ideas.

With thanks,
Beth Carpenter & Jean Anderson, 2013 WLA Conference Program Co-Chairs

MPL’s Coordinator of Youth & Community Outreach Services Wins Award

Kelly Hughbanks has won the 2012 WLA Outreach Services Award. Each year, the Outreach Services Award (formerly called the Frances de Usabel award) is sponsored by the Outreach Services Roundtable (OSRT) and is awarded to a “library or librarian who has provided exemplary library outreach services to underserved populations.” Public, academic, school or special libraries and librarians are all eligible to be nominated for this award. Nominees should be members of the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) but do not need to be members of the Outreach Services Round Table.
The award was created as a tribute to the Special Needs Consultant for the Wisconsin Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning, Frances de Usabel. For many years, de Usabel worked to promote and increase outreach services in Wisconsin public libraries. She continues to support the efforts of libraries and librarians in doing their outreach work through her generous donation of the funds for the monetary award.
Kelly Hughbanks has excelled in her outreach work as the Coordinator of Youth & Community Outreach Services at the Milwaukee Public Library. Hughbanks has written several LSTA grants for which she was awarded money to do programs such as Books2Go/Libros para llevar which reaches approximately 800 childcare centers per year to “, improve(s) reading readiness in children aged 0 to 5 by developing the Six Skills of Early Literacy, and providing intensive outreach and mentoring to 32 childcare providers and families located in neighborhoods with the highest concentration of poverty.”
“In 2012, Kelly expanded the library’s Summer Super Reader Outreach Program by utilizing federal Community Development Block Grant funds in combination with private and City funding to reach 2,292 children at 80 childcare centers. Each center is visited by a library educator three times over the summer who actively engaged the children in the Summer Super Reader Program and early literacy activities,” said Joan Johnson, Deputy Library Director, Milwaukee Public Library, who nominated Hughbanks for the award.
Johnson also said, “Kelly is a good spokesperson for MPL’s Youth and Outreach Services and has made numerous appearances on local broadcast television. She has been an inspiring leader for the children’s staff who are providing direct service. She is strategic in her use of staff’s skills and strengths, and all the resources at her disposal to maximize the impact of the services and programs under her purview. She has served at the State level as Chair of WLA’s Youth Services Section and is respected by her peers. Those who know her work would be pleased to join us in honoring her with this nomination.”
Clearly Kelly Hughbanks is well-deserving of this recognition for her work. Her efforts have had a positive impact on thousands of children in the Milwaukee Area. The OSRT board is proud to recognize Kelly for all she has done in her outreach efforts. As the winner of the Outreach Services Award, Hughbanks will receive a one-year membership in the Outreach Services Round Table and cash award of $250.

Nuevas Referencias, a blog for librarians and bibliophiles

Artist, librarian and curator Patricia Figueroa is publishing this bilingual blog featuring interviews with new Spanish-speaking authors.
With more than 30 deep and complete interviews, the purpose of Figueroa's blog is to showcase new Spanish-speaking authors and expose them to librarians and book lovers. “Nuevas Referencias is a bilingual blog for librarians and bibliophiles who wish to discover new Spanish-speaking authors in order to enrich and update the literary collections they maintain,” she explains on her blog. “Each interview is dedicated to an author who will present his/her work, influences and use of new technology and social media within specific literary circles.”
Nuevas Referencias also includes other blogs, magazines, web sites, and anthologies recommended by Figueroa.
